Colwell, Totland, Alum Bay (and the Needles) and back.

DISTANCE-6.25| DIFFICULTY-|

This walk offers great variety, with beautiful beaches, heathland, and stunning coastal vistas. This walk has it all .. including best, certainly prettiest loos on the Island and wise words on tides.

I am going to offer several variants to try and cover ‘all persuasions’!

  1. One will be starting from Colwell Common and walking to Alum Bay and back, along the coastal path, with a dip down onto the beach just below the ‘park’ at Alum Bay – offering the option of folk who want to stay on, take a boat, look round the park, go onto the Needles, etc doing their own thing. i.e making it a linear walk for those who are happy either walking back by themselves, along the same well sign-posted walk, or catching the bus. I will of course offer to return with those who are happy just to spend a more limited time at Alum Bay.
  2. Another will be going onto the Needles and then doing a loop back along Tennyson Down.
  3. Another will be doing the above but adding on Freshwater, doing a loop back from there – so this walk will obviously be quite a bit further.

Just to give some indication of distance and time:

  1. Distance around 6.25 miles. With, say an hour at Alum Bay, time allowance for this walk around 4 – 5 hours. (To break that down, its about 1.5 hours walking each way, plus hour at Alum Bay, plus hour as my ‘add on time’!
  2. This will not include hour’s stop-over at Alum Bay so, given distance around Needles/Tennyson loop is about 4.4 miles, total distance will be about 10 miles (at most) and take 5 – 6 hours. This is approximate and I will give a more exact time and distance nearer the time.
  3. This could be a bit of a marathon – untried as yet – so watch this space for further details!
