AROUND historic CARISBROOKE CASTLE

DISTANCE-Various | DIFFICULTY-Easy | around 2 hours.

I can offer three walks around Historic Carisbrooke Castle, all starting at the free car park opposite the Priory, just up the hill from the Castle:

  1. 4.5 miles, around 2 hours (allow for 3) – this circular route from just south of Carisbrooke Castle takes us up onto the Tennyson Trail – the only slightly challenging ascent on this walk – and back round.
  2. 5.3  miles, around 2 – 3 hours – this circular walk takes us into Newport, via deer park and cemetery, and back.
  3. 6 miles, around 3 – 4 hours. This, of the three, is my favourite circular walk from Carisbrooke Castle. It takes a slightly wider route out, at the beginning than the first walk, but ending up taking the same route back along the Tennyson Trail.

The ‘ramparts walk’ within the Castle grounds, as shown in the photos, is not included in any of the walks. You need to be a member of English Heritage for this, and depending on the time of year, admission times are very limited – to just Saturdays and Sundays in the winter months. Given this situation, I am happy to do another guided walk around the outside of the Castle – either as an add on to the above walks or as a separate one.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Lovely circular walk from the castle. A lot of history
